Business Development for Book and Website
We’re looking for an outgoing, high-energy person to lead the promotion and sales of the new edition of a book (Word of Mouth Marketing: How Smart Companies Get People Talking) and the launch of a new website (WordofMouth.org).
This is a high-profile assignment that will position you as an expert in front of the leaders in the social media business — a real career-maker if you knock it out of the park.
This is a full-time contract project through December that could lead to a permanent position. You’ll be based in our Austin office.
You need to know and love the concepts of great word of mouth marketing: how companies earn the respect and recommendations of their customers. You’ll need to be able to talk the talk of this exciting new field, because you’ll be working with the biggest thinkers on the topic.
Your job for the book promotion:
- Sales: Lead a sales campaign to sell bulk books to a target list of 5,000 interested prospects. This involves a heavy schedule of phone calls.
- Business development: Securing partnerships with allied websites, authors, and events to get them to promote our book and place bulk orders.
- Social media: Lead a high-visibility campaign to promote the book and site via Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and YouTube.
- PR: Create promotions to generate excitement and press.
After the initial book launch, you’ll extend the book promotion activities into long-term promotion for the website. You’ll help develop promotional partnerships, content-sharing deals, and other opportunities.
You:
- Talk the talk about word of mouth marketing and social media. You’re well-read in marketing and ready to talk to top marketers.
- Self-starting, self-managing executive who can run a solo project from start to finish.
- Experienced with sales and business development. You have strong fundamental sales/business development skills (but not a salesy style).
- Can work the phones, make connections, and open doors.
- Creative deal-maker with an eye for smart win-win partnerships.
- Focused on the success of other people — you win by helping our partners win.
- Passionate about building enduring relationships.
- Looking for a way to be part of this revolution, in a way that your work has immediate impact.
- Fantastic writing and communication skills.
- Completely confident in an all-online work environment, including hosted web apps.
- Love to pick up the phone and talk about what you do.
- An evangelist and energizer — you get people excited.
- High levels of energy, drive, enthusiasm, initiative, flexibility, good humor, and commitment.
- Honest, trustworthy, and ethical.
- Nice to work with.

About GasPedal and SocialMedia.org:
SocialMedia.org is the community for social media leaders at more than 180 of the world’s greatest brands, including Procter & Gamble, Dell, Wells Fargo, Microsoft, Home Depot, and many others (see socialmedia.org/members). We’re a small company who works with amazing people doing fantastic things in social media.
GasPedal teaches companies how to earn great word of mouth. Businesses everywhere are beginning to realize that honest, ethical customer love is the most powerful kind of marketing. They are learning to listen, to obsess over customer experience, to treat people like people, to value values, to respect the environment, to be part of the community — to be nice.
We teach them how to do it.
We believe that this is good for society — and that it’s a profitable business strategy. Companies that get their customers for free through the power of word of mouth have a fundamental competitive advantage over those that use expensive marketing to chase fleeing customers. Smart companies reinvest those savings in service, support, and innovation — putting them even further ahead.
GasPedal is a dream job if you are interested in blogs, social media, or the future of marketing. You won’t be just reading about the visionaries. You’ll be working with them to make the future more ethical and effective. Stop talking about this stuff — do something about it.
